If you want to use or test the latest features this can be done quite easily by setting a few environment variables:

I save this commands in a file new_gdal.sh. After running

source new_gdal.sh

You will be able to use all the latest gdal tools.

johan@x1:~$ source ~/latest_gdal.sh
johan@x1:~$ gdalinfo --version
GDAL 2.3.0dev, released 2017/99/99

Actually if you use this command, also tools dynamically linked to gdal will be using this latest version.

johan@x1:~$ saga_cmd io_gdal

SAGA Version: 6.4.0
Library: GDAL/OGR
Category: Import/Export
File: /usr/local/lib/saga/libio_gdal.so
Description:
Interface to Frank Warmerdam's Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL).
Version 2.3.0dev

Note that this will work well for packages dynamically linked to the C api. If packages are linked to the C++ api, they may need recompilation.

If you are on windows, you could have a look at SDKShell.bat (part of the builds from Tamas Szekeres).

Note: I actually wrote this blogpost because in his presentation on FOSDEM Jeremy Mayeres recommended using Docker for using the latest version of GDAL. I think that solution is overkill for desktop usage, and using environment variables is easier.Johan Van de Wauwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13616087982625901596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1139831347829888451.post-56066014075907690722018-03-07T14:39:00.001-08:002018-03-18T14:07:18.064-07:00Don't use zonal statistics as a table in ArcGISShort version: Don't ever use zonal statistics as a table in arcgis. It manages to do simple calculations such as calculating an average wrong.

Example of using zonal statistics between grid cells (from the ArcGIS manual)

Long version:

I was hired by a customer to determine why they got unexpected results for their analyses. These analyses led to an official map with legal consequences.
After investigating their whole procedure a number of issues were found. But the major source of errors was one which I found very unlikely: it turns out that the algorithm used by ArcGIS spatial analyst to determine the average grid value in a shape is wrong. Not just a little wrong. Very wrong.
And no, I am not talking about the no data handling which was very wrong as well, I'm talking about how the algorithm compares vectors and rasters
Interestingly, this seems to be known, as the arcgis manual states

It is recommended to only use rasters as the zone input, as it offers you greater control over the vector-to-raster conversion. This will help ensure you consistently get the expected results.

So how does arcgis compare vectors and rasters? In fact one could invent a number of algorithms:

Use the centers of the pixels and compare those to the vectors (most frequently used and fastest).

Use the actual area of the pixels

Use those pixels of which the majority of the area is covered by the vector.

None of these algorithm matches with the results we saw from arcgis, even though the documentation seems to suggest the first method is used.
So what is happening? It seems that arcgis first converts your vector file to a raster, not necessarily in the same grid system as the grid you compare to. Then it interpolates your own grid (using an undocumented method) and then takes the average of those interpolated values if their cells match with the raster you supplied. This means pixels outside your shape can have an influence on the result. This mainly seems to occur when large areas are mapped (eg Belgium at 5m).

The average of this triangle is calculated by ArcGIS as 5.47

I don't understand how the market leader in GIS can do such a basic operation so wrong, and the whole search also convinced me how important it is to open the source (or at least the algorithm used) to get reproducible results.
Anyway, if you are still stuck with arcgis, know that you can install SAGA GIS as a toolbox. It contains sensible algorithms to do a vector/raster intersection and they are also approximately 10 times faster than the ArcGIS versions. Or you can have a look at how Grass and QGIS implement this. All of this of course only if you consistently want to get the expected results...

And if your government also uses ArcGIS for determining taxes or other policies, perhaps they too should consider switching to a product which consistently gives the expected results.

On 22 september there will be two conferences: one FOSS4G Belgium conference organised by the local , which focuses on software for Geo. There will also be a lot of attention to open (geo) data sets provided by different governement agencies in Belgium.

On the same day in a different location the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team will also be gathering for their HOT summit. After both events, forces will be joined for a mapathon.

The next three days the international openstreetmap conference will be happening at VUB.

Last but not least on Monday after all events, there will be a hackday, focused on OSM and OSGeo technologies.

The theme will be webmapping and especially Openlayers 3. There will be two speakers, Pierre Marchand of Atelier Cartographique wil give an overview of Webmapping tools. Later we will take a deeper dive with Thomas Gratier, one of the authors of the OpenLayers 3 Beginners guide.

OpenLayers 3 is a JavaScript based library for web mapping, published under BSD license. It groups a set of functionalities to create both lightweight web mapping applications and more heavy web mapping applications for advanced usages. It enables display of geographic features (markers, lines, polygons) with custom styles, most of the time with background maps services from various sources (including OpenStreetMap). It manages all interactions to select, draw geographic entities, display, measure geographic coordinates and manage different Earth representations using cartographic projections.

The event will happen at BEL in Brussels (those who were at FOSS4G.be will remember the place), next monday 18 april at 19:00 until 22:00. The event is free. You can register here.

Hope to see many of you in Brussels!
Last Sunday, during FOSDEM the second edition of the geospatial devroom was happening.
As
said before we had a nice lineup with 15 presentations with topics
ranging from established GIS tools, Open Streetmap, 3D visualisation and
spatial databases.

Anyway,
I did the first presentation on SAGA GIS, and I was happy to have some
very nice slides prepared by other members of the SAGA community.

Next up was Hugo Mercier (Oslandia) who presented Tempus. Planning multimodal transportation is a very hard problem, and it was nice to see that you can actually get the sources of the whole project. Next up was Astrid Emde presenting Mapbender, an OSGeo project allowing one to create web SDI's easily.
The next talk by Zeeshan Ali, "Build a geo-aware OS" was one where I was looking
forward to : the talk is not one you usually encounter during
FOSS4G conferences, but an example of the crosspolination of
technologies you get at FOSDEM. It shows how location can now be used in Gnome (and other projects building on FreeDesktop) using common API's.
But based on the feedback and the slides, I'm
really looking forward to the video of the talk.
Still in a crowded room Ilya Zverev gave a talk about mapping with OSM with a phone . Rather than mapping using satellite imagery, it makes more sense to map when you are actually in the field.

The next talks were all focused on 3D. Thomas Bremer talked about how one could implement a flight simulator in javascript. He focused on the different components that could build such a simulator. I hope to see a demo of this soon. The next talk was on the integration of Openlayers and Cesium. I missed the talk myself (one has to get lunch at one point), but I got some nice feedback. The last talk in our 3D theme was Vincent Mora on iTowns, showing impressive Lidar scans of large parts of Paris. Even though many of us are still struggling with 2D, a lot of data collection is now 3D and I think GIS systems still have to catch up.

The next block of four presentations were all on databases. Starting of with MySQL GIS. I was pleasantly suprised by the presentation. MySQL and Oracle got some bad press in some open source communities, but I believe the way they are working on MySQL is examplary: not only is MySQL catching up quickly with other (spatial) databases, this is largely done by improving the underlying boost geometry library, which can be leveraged by other projects. Oracle is currently sponsoring 2 developers on that project.

Also Rasdaman, a raster array database extension for PostgreSQL was presented. Even though their use cases may currently be 'far from the bed' of many developers, I like the fact that they are not only implementing a product, but also shaping the standards (OGC and ISO) on the way.

The third presentation focused on the geographical capabilities of a completely different type of database: mongoDB. I see a lot of possibilities of this database for geodata which is not as structured as classic databases. Nice to see their performance is improving.

The last presentation in the on pivotal Greenplum database was sometimes hard to follow, but I will definitely check it out further: I was not aware of the database, but it is a parallel database based on Postgresql, meaning that postgis functionality can be used, but also the extensions for trajectory data which were the topic of the presentation.

Closing the devroom was a presentation on geocoding by Ervin Ruci, which is a topic where the performance of open solutions can still be improved a lot.

At the end of the day, the closing keynote of FOSDEM, which was given by the people of HOT OSM. A full Janson is always something special, and this is definitely true for a topic of a talk I'm so familiar with.

To conclude, I believe the devroom at FOSDEM was a great event, and I really think it has its special role compared to other events such as FOSS4G and State of the Map - the chance to meet other open source communities.

Videos of the day should be available soon, thanks to the incredible FOSDEM video team and Anne Ghisla and Thomas Gratier who helped with the camera/organisation.

We have a nice lineup with some well known GIS tools, moving over to new developments happening at OSGeo and Open Streetmap. 3D visualisation is the topic of different presentations around noon. And should you prefer backend work, the afternoon has a lineup of no less than 4 different geospatial databases (MySQL, Rasdaman, Mongodb and Pivotal).
For all of you who don't know FOSDEM: FOSDEM is a free and non-commercial event bringing together about 5000 developers in Brussels, Belgium. The goal is to provide open source software developers and communities a place to meet and share thoughts. The participation is free of charge, although donations are welcome. The next edition will take place the last weekend ofJanuary 30 - 31 2016. This year for the second time there will be a Geospatial devroom on Sunday 31/1/2016.
Debian released its new stable release "8.0" nicknamed "jessie".

Deep down the release notes you will find a sentence which may be interesting for anyone interested in GIS on this platform:

During the jessie development cycle many changes from UbuntuGIS were merged back into Debian GIS. The collaboration with UbuntuGIS and OSGeo-Live projects was improved, resulting in new packages and contributors. Visit Debian GIS tasks pages to see the full range of GIS software inside Debian and the Debian GIS homepage for more information.

This means that in jessie you will find a number of new packages (owslib, pgrouting,spatialite-gui,tinyows) and updates to many of the large well known packages: gdal, mapserver, postgis, qgis, saga and grass, but also to openstreetmap related packages such as josm.

If you are looking for a stable distribution which offers many gis packages out of the box, debian jessie is definitely the way to go, as it will be supported for five years.

Just a few days before the release of jessie also ubuntu had a new release: 15.04 nicknamed "vivid". Much of the work that was done in Debian for jessie is included in this release (since ubuntu is based on debian), and some packages even got synced from the development versions of Debian: you will find that vivid contains the current release for eg gdal, postgis and saga, without having to rely on a third party archive!

All of this was possible because DebianGIS, and Sebastic in particular have been very active. Now that jessie is released, more energy will go into packaging new packages and versions, so if your pet GIS project is not in Debian/Ubuntu yet (or not up-to-date as you would like), it is the ideal moment to join!
Full schedule here.
But apart from the lineup on Sunday, also Saterday actually has a number of interesting geo-related talks as well:

10:35 - 10:55 (distributions devroom)

From Debian-GIS to OSGeo live and back (yep shameless self-promotion)

12:00 - 12:50 (hardware track)

A GPS watch made of free software and hardware

14:00 - 14:25 (graph devroom)

From Open Street Map to your preferred graph database...

15:00 - 15:50 (hardware track)

FreeCAD
a hackable design platform

And I'm sure you will probably find many other interesting presentations in one of the other 550 lectures. So hope to see many of you at FOSDEM!

Update
I noted there is another geo-related talk on Sunday, unfortunately in parallel with the program for the geospatial devroom:

Web mapping with MySQL
An introduction to MySQL GIS

I was very surprised by the number of people who submitted proposals for presentations and the quality of the proposals. All speakers have now confirmed, so I'm really happy I can share the schedule with all of you.

Head over to:
https://fosdem.org/2015/schedule/track/geospatial/
to have a look.

For those who don't know it, FOSDEM is one of Europe's largest open source developer gatherings. Access is free and no registration is required. It takes place on Saterday 31 january and Sunday 1 february (when we will have the geospatial devroom).

If you can not come to Brussels (or if the room is full): we will stream/record everything, so you can still enjoy the great talks.
Last month we published a call for participation for the Geospatial devroom at FOSDEM .

But with many other conferences around one may wonder why they want to be present at geospatial@FOSDEM? Well, one of the main goals of the organisers is to bring geospatial and non-geo developers together. Are you interested in building your own GPS device or drone? Check out some of the talks in the embedded room. Are you using java, python, php, perl? All those languages have dedicated rooms where you can get an update. Interested in routing or using postgresql? Yep, there is a graph devroom and a postgresql room. Want to get your software in linux distributions? The distribution devroom. The same is true the other way around, people from those communities can come to see your talk as well.

Anyway, already a number of interesting talks has been submitted, and I just want to remind everyone of the deadline of **1 december**. So if you are interested in presenting something - go ahead and submit your proposal! Don't postpone - if you have just a title - submit that already :-)

Some practical announcements: if you are interested in the devroom, consider joining the devroom mailinglist. We will be using that mailinglist to send updates on the devroom and a social event. FOSDEM itself is free of charge and requires no registration, so no obligations here: you can just show up as well.

A last note: we want to stream the tracks and provide videos. If you intent to come and have experience with video (or would like to get some), please get in touch, we could still use volunteers.

Please help testing! Windows users may find a snapshot build here (attention, 64 bit only).

Users on ubuntu can also test by using the builds provided on my launchpad ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~johanvdw/+archive/ubuntu/sagacvs

Those using debian can actually download the source packages from
those daily builds as well (eg dget
https://launchpad.net/~johanvdw/+archive/ubuntu/sagacvs/+files/saga_2.1.2%2Bdfsg%2Bsvn2248%2B21~ubuntu14.10.1.dsc
) and build from source. All others can of course also build from source as well.Johan Van de Wauwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13616087982625901596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1139831347829888451.post-66250304586599914222014-10-17T00:34:00.000-07:002014-10-17T00:36:05.815-07:00Call For papers Geospatial devroom @FOSDEMPlease forward!

FOSDEM
is a free open source event bringing together about 5000 developers in
Brussels, Belgium. The goal is to provide open source software
developers and communities a place to meet at. The next edition will
take place the weekend 31/1 -> 1/2/2015. This year for the first time
there will be a geospatial devroom on Sunday 1/2/2015!
Baseline: By installing Debian GIS on your phone/tablet/... next to Android, you can turn the device into a powerful GIS workstation or server without loosing any of the original functionality.

My experiments started earlier this week. I was informed of a bug in debian: saga gis failed to build on an arm processor (a type of low power chips often found in mobile devices). Rather than turning to some server provided by debian to fix the build I thought of doing something else: I knew my phone also has an arm processor. And since android is based on linux, I thought it should be possible to run debian on it in a seperate "chroot" environment.

After doing some research I found "debkit". This is actually an app you can install right through google play. This app will give some very simple instructions on how to install debian on your device (the device needs to be rooted. Otherwise it will not work). The actual instructions were very straightforward and I had a running debian installation with desktop support installed in less than one hour.

What you get is actually a full debian distribution, and in fact that means that you can also install a lot of GIS related packages.

Installing gdal through the command line

Since I was doing all of this on a smartphone, typing gets tedious very fast, so I used an external keyboard. And yes: that looks really silly (check picture below). Even better is installing ssh, then you can connect from a pc or laptop to continue the installation.

attaching a keyboard makes typing easier :-)

You can even go one step further and install a graphical desktop environment, this means you can in fact run packages like qgis and saga on your phone. Though I agree that this is not very useful using a phone as a desktop replacement, it may be a powerful way to check some data or perhaps run a simple analysis in the field. Apart from that, plenty of tablets, cheap laptops and TV sets based on android or chrome os exist. Ones that you may prefer taking to the field rather than your real workstation. The screenshot below was taken from a desktop environment running on my phone. I should add that this works relatively smooth and was not stressing the device.

Hard to distinguish from a real desktop, but this is an actual screenshot taken on my smartphone (lenovo p780)

But perhaps even more useful is that you can actually run servers on the device as well. If you have a webapplication that usually runs on a debian server you may actually be able to take it with you on the device, and use the standard android browser to use it. Not something you would like as a proper solution, but could be worth it for proof or concepts, ...

Mapserver running locally and serving as a wms

It also shows nicely how you actually use debian next to android: you don't replace any existing things. It can lead to special situations as well. While I had just started compiling some software, I got a phonecall and just picked up the phone ...

All of this would not have been possible if all debian contributors would not have been so eager in supporting so many ports, and the debian gis team in bringing a lot of GIS software to the distribution!

The baseline of the book is "60 recipes to create GIS web applications with the open source JavaScript library". This means that the book is based on 60 examples which can be viewed online . The code is also available on github.
I like this style: the way I search for specific OpenLayers features is usually by studying example programs such as the ones on the OpenLayers website. It gives a quick feel of whether a certain feature is feasible or not and how much work it would take to implement.
There is always a danger with this type of approach and that is that you start copy/pasting code which you don't understand. This is where this book shows it's advantage over the examples on the OpenLayers website: apart from the code, which is well readable and formatted, every example is accompanied by a section "how it works" and usually also links to related examples. Every chapter also starts with an introduction which covers the basic classes and concepts used.

The book contains content for both beginners and advanced users. I skipped quickly through the first three chapters: Web mapping basics, adding raster layers and working with vector layers. I should add that topics are discussed in detail: clustering of vector features, filtering of WFS requests.

A GIS application often is only as good as it looks, and two chapters discuss the theming of the openlayers interface and the styling of map features. The examples go all the way down to creating a new custom theme.

As a more advanced OpenLayers users I liked these chapters and the three remaining ( working with events, adding controls, beyond the basics) the most. Some non-obvious extensions to openlayers are discussed: interacting with services, creating custom controls and renderers, ...
Almost evrery application of OpenLayers can benefit from some of the recipes in these chapters.

Conclusion

I can recommend this book to anyone who wants to build applications with OpenLayers. The structure with recipes allows one to quickly find out how a feature can be implemented, moreover there is always a complete explanation of of how things work in the book (and where things can go wrong, such as cross domain requests).

If I have to talk about one disadvantage of the book? Development of OpenLayers 3 (which is incompatible with OpenLayers 2) is ongoing and beta 2 has been released recently. Since this book is from 2012 it predates most of these recent developments. I would have loved a chapter highlighting what best-practices one should follow to make a switch to a future version of OpenLayers as easy as possible.Johan Van de Wauwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13616087982625901596noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1139831347829888451.post-28964407856977721412014-02-10T11:39:00.004-08:002014-02-10T11:39:51.462-08:00Put your data on a map! This blogpost is a transcript of presentation I gave in 26 october during the T-dose conference in Eindhoven, The Netherlands. I wanted to give a talk about how open source software, open data and open standards enable almost everyone to easily create maps and add a geocomponent to other application.
One of the things that struck me was how by just showing where one can find data about Belgium and the Netherlands I could give demonstrations of almost all important web-based GIS applications. Since all these applications are freely available and often beautiful examples of what can be done with FOSS GIS software I think they are also useful for a broader audience than just Belgium/The Netherlands.
I just want to add that I finished packaging for debian and ubuntu and the new release is now also available on my ppa and on ubuntugis unstable, and will be on the next osgeo live dvd.Johan Van de Wauwhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13616087982625901596noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1139831347829888451.post-31635379210867351072013-09-06T13:56:00.001-07:002013-09-06T14:08:15.132-07:00On bicycle accidents and furry pornographyA few days ago, the Belgian newspaper de standaard published this map depicting the number of bicyle accidents per community in Flanders.

When I saw the map I quickly had to think of this XKCD comic:

Yes, logically most accidents happen in communes with a large population. Normalizing by population seems a sensible thing to do.
I thought this was a good opportunity to take some time to document what's new.

The major (from a technical point of view) change was the switch of wxwidgets 2.8 to wxwidgets 2.9. One of the major reasons that switch was made was to have better support for MacOSX, and it was also an opportunity to solve some unicode issues.

But unless you are using MacOSX this will not really help you. So you may be more interested in some other new features. One of the most relevant is support for parallel processing and some other performance enhancements. If you have a multicore processor you may find out that performance in some grid procedures like reclassification, resampling and calculation of convergence and wetness index is much better in this new build.
Currently, the voting members have to decide whether they accept the proposal or not. As one of the contributors to the OSGEO-Live dvd, Cameron Shorter invited me to the discussion at Osgeo discuss list.
This discussion comes at an interesting time. Just a few weeks ago I did a session on geospatial web services in my company. The actual reason that we covered this topic is that there are two interesting (and diverting) trends happening at the same time:

The current OGC standards are finally taking off. Ever since our governement started serving their large-scale reference maps as publicly available WMS services, I see them being used by many of our customers

At the same time, I managed finding interesting data sets using CSW services for the first time, and the fact that view and metaservices have to be provided for INSPIRE III themes by the end of the year will probably mean that the shift to using services is finally taking off.

On the other hand RESTful GIS services have started popping up everywhere. ESRI's proposed Geoservices REST API is one, GeoREST is another one which I've enjoyed using.

Actually my first thoughts when using ESRI's api was a sense of relief: I really enjoyed using these services. The fact that I can just tinker using an URL rather than having to use a special SOAP client was nice. My productivity as a programmer increased enormously. I couldn't figure out why anybody would want to use SOAP-like services (without going in a semantic discussion).

So you would expect that I'd support the Geoservices REST API as an OGC standard? Well, no. Quite a large number of valid points have been raised: the name is bad, the existing reference implementation is commercial without available sources, ...

But I'd like to raise a different point: there are too many different services involved: the proposed standard comes in 8 different parts, all covering services which in my opinion unrelated.

12-054r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 1: Core
12-055r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 2: Catalog
12-056r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 3: Map Service
12-057r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 4: Feature Service
12-058r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 5: Geometry Service
12-059r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 6: Image Service
12-060r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 7: Geoprocessing Service
12-061r2 GeoServices REST API - Part 8: Geocoding Service

This is the opposite of the unix philosophy: have one tool for the job. This is what in my opinion services should be about: have one service for every job, so one standard for every service.

One tool for every job? Image source

I don't understand why a good feature service should also provide geocoding, maps or any other service. Yet these small tools will not be able to comply to the standard because they can provide only one service.

So my proposal would be: break up the proposal. Check where new standards may be useful or where RESTFul implementations of existing services (and we already have a long list) are more appropriate. The services provided by ESRI prove that such an implementation really boosts productivity.

And actually while doing this, perhaps we should immediately consider using binary data where appropriate. I started off by saying that web services are finally being used. I did not mention WFS. This is logical. Nobody likes WFS. It is too slow. If WMS would contain an xml record for every pixels with an attribute for every color nobody would use it either. No, WMS sends a binary image. Why isn't WFS doing the same and sending vector data in a binary form?

Using Mapguide
selection with OpenLayers

Mapguide is a great solution for building web applications: it has the best administrative interface of all open-source (and some commercial) web servers, it is
very fast with vector data, it integrates nicely with AutoCAD Map 3D, ...

Even though I am
very satisfied with the basic viewer, it does not play well on mobile devices. Creating a viewer using OpenLayers seems the way to go, and it is in fact the library used by
the fusion viewer and AutoDesk's own mobile viewer.

Since I wanted my
mobile viewer integrated with an existing application, I prefered rolling my
own viewer based on OpenLayers: for integration with the rest of an existing
webapplication I prefer a simple viewer rather than having all the bells and whistles of the fusion viewer.
